CANOE/KAYAK SLALOM: Dual world champion Jessica Fox has finished fifth in the women’s K1 final at the fourth ICF slalom World Cup in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain.
The 21-year-old got off to a strong start on her run in the final, she was up at the first split, continued her momentum through the middle, but lost time on the bottom section of the course.
Fox recorded a clean run to finish 4.27 seconds behind Austrian Corinna Kuhnle, who used her raw power to her advantage by producing a faultless run in the final to win the gold medal in 97.33.
Kuhnle went one better than last year, upstaging local favourites Maialen Chourraut and Marta Martinez of Spain, who filled the minor placings.
For Fox it was her third K1 final of the series so far, and puts her in a strong position ahead of the final World Cup in Pau, France next week.
From there she will shift her attention to the World Championships in London, which double as Olympic qualifications this year.
The Australian team appear to be in a strong position with both Fox and Lucien Delfour showing strong form in the men’s and women’s K1 event.
On Saturday, Delfour won bronze behind French world champion Boris Neveu in the K1 final. While Fox won her third consecutive C1 gold medal on the 1992 Olympic course.
