GYMNASTICS: Australia has recorded its best individual result at a Trampoline World Championship since 1996 and completed a very successful campaign at the 31st Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships in Odense, Denmark, walking away with a bronze medal, and remaining in the hunt for a trampoline spot in the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro.
South Australia’s Blake Gaudry finished in 14th position after reaching the semi-final stage of the Men’s Individual trampoline competition, securing Australia a position in the Rio Test Event to be held in April 2016, where a further eight positions will be up for grabs to take to the Olympic podium in August.
Meanwhile in the Men’s Double Mini Trampoline Individual Final, Matthew Weal from New South Wales produced a stellar performance, scoring a total of 74.8 to claim the bronze medal, Australia’s best performance in the event since 2000 Olympian Ji Wallace contested the discipline at the 1996 World Championships.
Overall 15 athletes contested eight events in Odense, with Australia producing five finalists, one reserve finalist, one medal and four fourth place finals finishes, narrowly missing the podium.
It was a successful tournament for Australia, not just in terms of results on the podium, but with some quality new talent stepping it up for their first performances on the world stage. It was also the first time in ten years that Australia’s has entered a Women’s Trampoline Team at the World Championships.
