SOCHI 2014: With just over 56 percent of the total events on the Olympic program completed so far in Sochi, Germany currently leads the official medal tally, with seven golds won so far.
The most successful events for the German's have come in the Luge discipline, with four gold medals won. Germany finished second overall on the medal tally in Vancouver behind the Canadians on gold (14) and behind USA on total medals, 37 vs 30.
Two nations making strong gains from Vancouver are the Netherlands (5 gold/17 total) and host nation Russa (4 golds/16 total).
The Netherlands have won an amazing 16 medals in Speed Skating at the Adler Arena Skating Center, including five gold medals.
The host nation Russian's have the best spread of medals, winning across eight different sports.
Norway has dominated the Laura Cross Country centre, winning seven medals, including three gold medals. Norway is currently third on the table.
The USA won the most total number of medals in Vancouver, and is tied for second in Sochi, with 16 medals won in total.
Canada has fallen from first in Vancouver to sixth in Sochi, which would be expected considering the drop off from being a host nation.
Australia is currently 23rd on the medal tally with one silver and one bronze. Australia’s best medal result was three medals in 2010.
Dutch Speed Skater Ireen Wust and Swedish cross country skier Charlotte Kalla have both won three medals so far at the Games. With one gold and two silvers.
