Mark McNee and Lachlan Hay have each placed second in their heats of the 1500m event at the World Cup in Madison, USA, Hay behind Apolo Anton Ohno of the US and McNee behind JiaJun Li of China.

Mark McNee and Lachlan Hay have each placed second in their heats of the 1500m event at the World Cup in Madison, USA, Hay behind Apolo Anton Ohno of the US and McNee behind JiaJun Li of China.

Both were skated out in the semifinals, but McNee registered a season-best 12th place overall and Hay a career-best 16th place, his first time in the top 20.

Ohno went on to win the 1500m from Canadian Matthieu Turcotte.

McNee also won his preliminary round of the 500m, finishing 18th overall in the short sprint.

The Australian relay team missed a place in the semi-finals, finishing third behind China and Italy.

The next World Cup will be in Saguenay, canada, form December 3-5.
