SPEED SKATING: Australia's sole representative in Speed Skating, Daniel Greig, has had his first official training practice at the Adler Arena in Sochi.

Greig and his training partners from the Dutch Olympic Team got to know the ice again, having competed here once before at the Test Evevnt last year, with some easy laps around the rink, situated in the heart of Olympic Park.

"It's important for him to get to know the ice again," Greig's coach Desly Hill said.

"This track is good for athletes like Daniel," she said. "The ice is 'breaky' and that favours the smaller athletes."

Greig was happy with his first session on the ice and is looking forward to the opportunity to have a test race over 500m on Wednesday.

"The race is not really to see how fast I'm going," Greig explained. "I know I'm going fast. It's more to just get used to the feel of the ice under racing conditions  and get my mind into racing."

Greig has been posting some great results lately and is confident but not complacent about his goal of finishing in the top five.

"A couple of years ago, I set myself the goal of top five. It was a pretty lofty goal back then, and even now it's not going to be easy. The best guys in the world are here and they are all in the form of their life too."

Greig predicts that the top 20 men will have just a fraction of a second between them.

"There will probably only be about 0.4 seconds between all of us," he said. "And the top order keeps changing every time we race."

Greig will compete in the 500m on Day 3 - Monday 10 February and in the 1000m on Day 5 - Wednesday 12 February.
