SWIMMING: The Australian swim team has continued its brushes with fame at its pre-Olympic training camp in Manchester.

Hot on the heels of a visit to training by NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, soccer great Harry Kewell came to the Manchester Aquatic Centre on Friday.

Kewell, who was accompanied by one of his four children, revealed he had long admired the sport of swimming, and chatted to a number of the team about their individual preparation, diet, and workout regime.

“It’s great to be able to talk to other athletes, especially the Australians, about how they prepare for such important events,” Kewell said.

“What still amazes me is that for my sport, there is always next week, always another game – but for these guys, they get one chance every four years and it can be gone in an instant.”

The 32 year-old also spoke to Head Coach Leigh Nugent about managing the Team and keeping everyone focused.

Freestyler James Roberts had a long chat to Kewell – and described it as a great thrill.

“I’ve loved watching Harry play over the years and to see him here and so interested in our performances was awesome,” he said.

Kewell, who was happy to pose for photos and sign autographs for members of the Team, said he was looking forward to the sprint events on the swimming program, particularly the men’s 100 freestyle, along with all of the relays.

At the completion of the session, Kewell was presented with a signed Australian swim team cap by Eamon Sullivan.
