Tatiana Borodulina and Lachlan Hay have both made the semifinal rounds of the 1500m at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Vienna. Hay finished in second place in his opening heat behind Yuzo Takamido of Japan, then skated to first place in his quarter final round.

In the semi-finals, up against a high class seven-man field that included multiple Olympic gold medallist Apolo Anton Ohno, dual Olympic medallist Francois-Louis Tremblay of Canada and eventual silver medallist Yoon-Gy Kwak of Korea, the Australian finished in fifth place for 17th overall.

AIS team-mate Jeremy Beck, eliminated in the heats, placed 50th.

The women’s 1500m started at the quarter final stage with eight heats of either five or six skaters.

AIS/OWI Skater Borodulina finished in third place in her quarter final round, but then could only manage fifth in her semi-final for 15th place overall.

In other results from the Championships, Borodulina skated to 16th place in the 1000m and 24th place in the 500m, while Hay was 23rd in the 1000m and 28th in the 500m.

Beck was 29th in the 1000m and 37th in the 500m, while Alix-Myra Anderson’s best result was 31st in the 1000m.
