Ski and Snowboard Australia rider Stephanie Hickey has ridden to a personal best result in the opening snowboard cross World Cup of the season in Chapelco, Argentina, making the first final of her career.

Hickey qualified in 13th place in a time of one minute 42.08 seconds, 6.59 seconds behind fastest qualifier Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States.

In the quarter final, the 23-year-old Mt Buller rider finished in third place behind last season’s world number five, Helen Olafsen of Norway, and defending World Cup champion Maelle Ricker of Canada, missing out on a semi-final berth, but taking 12th overall.

Jacobellis went on to win the event from Swiss rider Mellie Francon, with Ricker collecting the bronze.

Hickey’s previous best World Cup result was 25th in Lake Placid in March 2007.
