For the first time in Champions Trophy history, the Hockeyroos will play-off for fifth place after losing to Argentina overnight.

In 13 appearances, the Hockeyroos' lowest finish was fourth, however, after not winning a game all tournament, with one game still to play, their fate has already been decided and they'll play New Zealand for fifth place on Sunday.

The game began well for Australia, with Karen Smith opening the scoring in the eighth minute when she got on the end of a Mel Twitt pass for an easy touch into goal.

Australia continued to dominate the half, earning three penalty corners, but again failed to capitalise on the chances - as has been the case all tournament, something that would be worrying national coach, Frank Murray, leading into the World Cup in September.

With the score 1-0 at half time the Hockeyroos looked a chance to win their first game of the tournament. The Argentineans had other ideas though and came out after the break and scored the equaliser in the first eight minutes.

The Hockeyroos rallied though and a minute later hit the lead again through a Nikki Hudson field goal.

Immediately following Hudson's goal the Argentineans had three penalty corners in a row. On their third attempt they managed to convert through Maria Hernandez, once again evening the score.

Argentina then dominated the last twenty minutes of the match but some great defensive work from the Hockeyroos kept them out.

The match looked headed for a draw until, in the final minute, the best player in women's hockey, Luciana Aymar, stepped up to the plate and delivered the matchwinner for the Argentineans, her drag flick flying into the net, keeping her team's finals hopes alive, and sending Australia to a fifth place play-off with one match still to play.
