Hockeyroos open with a win

The Hockeyroos have opened their Champions Trophy campaign with a 3-0 win over Japan in Quilmes, Argentina this morning.

The result is a good one for coach Frank Murray and his young, inexperienced side with three goals against a tight Japanese defence; while some good goalkeeping from Rachel Lynch denied Japan any score.

With his Champions Trophy team missing over 1400 games of experience, through injury or retirement, the Hockeyroos could have been excused for making a nervous start, however, they showed no sign of this and in the fourth minute opened their scoring when Renee Trost, on debut, scored her first international goal for the Hockeyroos.

The remainder of the half saw both teams squander some golden opportunities on goal with a mixture of great defence and sloppy skills resulting in no addition to the score before halftime.

After the break the Hockeyroos picked up their game, creating more opportunities and getting more fluency in their movement.

Twelve minutes into the half Amy Korner made it 2-0 for Australia, when she joined Trost in scoring her first international goal, nicely deflecting into the net from a well worked penalty corner.

Despite going two goals down, Japan were still in the match and continued to push the Australian defence but five minutes from time the Hockeyroos put the result beyond doubt when Peta Gallagher was given too much room in the circle, slamming her 15th international goal past the keeper for a solid win.

The Hockeyroos' second match is against Germany Monday morning (8:15am AEDT).

In other matches, tournament favourites the Netherlands beat World Cup semi-finalists Spain 3-1, while Argentina beat Germany 2-0.
