JUDO: Australia’s final judoka at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Miranda Giambelli, has bowed out in the opening round of competition at Carioca 1.
The -78kg fighter lost by ippon to hometown hero Mayra Aguiar 41 seconds into the match.
World number four Aguiar was always going to be a tough match up for the Aussie and following her first round victory she could go a long way to securing Brazil’s second judo gold medal in Rio.
The pair engaged from the outset but it was the Brazilian who soon took the advantage as she slammed Giambelli to the mat to score a Waza-ari.
A yuko followed as she flattened the Aussie out before the ippon secured Aguiar’s victory much to the delight of the local fans.
The result wraps up the judo competition for Australia having had seven athletes compete in Rio.
Jake Bensted and Katharina Haecker were Australia’s best performed athletes with both having made it through to the second round.
