TAEKWONDO: Safwan Khalil has won his second bronze medal in as many weeks after climbing onto the podium at the German Open in Hamburg.
Fighting in the -63kg division as opposed to his usual -58kg weight class, the London 2012 Olympian kicked off the tournament with victories over Austria’s Sandro Peer and USA’s Christian Liu.
A 6-3 win over Ivan Muradashvili of Russia ensured Khalil would secure a medal at which point he withdrew from the competition to prevent any chance of injury.
Caroline Marton started her competition with a victory against Hye-jin Jang of Korea before going down 9-2 to Durdane Altunel of Turkey in her second encounter.
Both Carmen Marton and Hayder Shkara bowed out with losses in the opening rounds of their competitions.
The four athletes will represent Australia at the Rio Olympic Games in a little over three months’ time.
Carmen and Caroline’s brother Jack missed out on Olympic selection but managed to also claim a bronze medal at the event.
