Australia’s men’s hockey coach Colin Batch says his team is expecting a fierce contest with Ireland as they prepare for their second Pool B game in Paris.

The Kookaburras won their opening match against world number six Argentina 1-0 thanks to a signature drag flick off a penalty corner from three-time Olympian Blake Govers right on the half-time hooter.

The prolific goal scorer was quick to shift the accolades to goalkeeper Andrew Charter post-match. The 37-year-old maintained a clean-sheet, blocking multiple attempts by Argentina to ensure the Kookaburras charged ahead in their gold medal pursuit unbeaten.

FIH Pro League newcomers Ireland lost their Games opener to defending champions Belgium 2-0 and will enter the match knowing they need a bold performance.

Despite Ireland being the lowest-ranked team in the pool and outside the top 10 in the world, Colin said the recent FIH Pro League champions will not be underestimating high-flying Ireland.

“We played Ireland early in the year when they had just qualified for the Olympics, and I don't think they were at their best there in India when we played them,” Colin said.

Australia won that match in February 4-1 and have a clean record against Ireland, having won every match in its history.

But Ireland has achieved a swift rise in 2024, propelling their nation up the ranks in time for their first Olympic Games since the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“We've seen them play really good hockey in the last few months. They beat Belgium twice in Belgium so they're capable that's for sure and we've got to make sure we prepare well for this game, we know they'll be up for it.

“They could definitely catch us off guard if we’re not careful and they've got some good players and some experienced players. Even though they weren't at the last Olympics, they've got some experience in their team with players who have played for 10 years plus.

“They're an attractive team to watch and they can hurt you on the counter attack.”

The match is set to be a milestone to remember for NSW’s Kookaburras forward Tim Brand who will bring up 100 caps for Australia, six years after his debut in 2018.
