The Kookaburras have kept their finals chances alive with a resounding 6-0 win over Argentina at the Champions Trophy in Spain overnight.
With one day to play, there are four teams with a shot at making Sunday's final with Spain and Netherlands sitting on top, on eight points, while Australia lies third, with seven, and Germany fourth with six.
The Kookaburras must beat Germany on Saturday to be guaranteed a spot in the final and not rely on other results.
Dean Butler returned for the Kookaburras and was instrumental in the 6-0 win, his impact immediately felt when he won a penalty corner in the first four minutes.
The resulting Troy Elder shot on goal was blocked by Argentina but the good start sent an ominous message to the other teams, the Kookaburras were switched on and in Terrassa to win.
Australia dominated the early possession and in the 19th minute Grant Schubert had two attempts at deflecting a goal, the second one successful for his second of the tournament and the opening goal of the match.
It soon became 2-0 shortly after when Luke Doerner sent his first of three goals into the back of the net from a penalty corner in the 28th minute.
Four minutes later he did it again to give the Kookaburras a strong 3-0 lead going into half time.
Intent not to let their strong lead slip this time, Australia continued to dominate in the second half and when Michael Boyce hit a flat tomahawk under the Argentinean keeper the score had blown out to 4-0.
The statistics for the match highlight the Kookaburras' dominance, with 36 circle penetrations to seven, and ten shots on goal to none, much of the play was in the Australian half, particularly late in the game.
In the last ten minutes the Kookaburras scored two more goals to complete the win, another penalty corner conversion to Doerner, for his third, while Michael McCann scored his third for the tournament.
Doerner was named Player of the Match for his three goals, while Dean Butler showed his value to this team with an outstanding game.
