Chinese skier Nina Li has upstaged Lydia Ierodiaconou for the second time in three days, taking gold in front of the Australian’s silver in Lake Placid, New York.

Li posted 186.72 points, just 0.71 ahead of Ierodiaconou, for her second victory of the season.

Former World Cup champion Alla Tsuper of Belarus was third on 176.19 points, with Jacqui Cooper in fourth place on 169.93.

Australia’s current number three aerialist, Liz Gardner, placed seventh with 164.41 points, Bree Munro was 18th on 135.23 and Lainie Cole 25th on 122.41.

Ierodiaconou was let down by her opening triple twisting double somersault, scoring seven points lower than her Chinese rival.

“My first jump was pretty average actually,” said Ierodiaconou.

“I wasn’t really great off the jump, so it wasn’t that nice in the air and it wasn’t a great landing either.”

“But the second jump was really, really good, I was really happy with that.”

“It was very close in the end, just .7 of a point, but Nina definitely should have won – both her jumps were better than mine today.”

“I’m very happy with the weekend. It’s a hard week with the two events and I’m feeling a bit tired.”

“I feel a lot more into the groove of jumping now. It takes a little bit of time to get your tricks comfortable and they are feeling much better now, so I just have to polish them up a bit.”

Cooper continues to impress with her technique, once again producing the highest scores from the group of skiers doing single and double twisting double somersaults. It is likely she will step up to triple somersaults in the next two weeks.

Ierodiaconou now leads the World Cup standings on 460 points, 75 points clear of Li. Cooper is in third place on 251 points, with Gardner moving up to eighth place on 144 points.

The next World Cup event is in the Canadian resort of Fernie next weekend, with another round scheduled the following weekend at the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic jumps site at Deer Valley.
