Led by Jacqui Cooper, Australia has finished the 2008 World Cup season as the pre-eminent force in women’s aerial skiing.

In what has been the best season of her career, Cooper won five events and made another podium on her way to her fifth World Cup title, two more crystal globes than any other woman has achieved.

She finished the season with 24 career World Cup victories, seven ahead of the next most prolific winner in the history of the sport.

Lydia Lassila, coming back from injury, ended her season in great style, taking silver in the final event in Davos to claim second place on the World Cup standings for the fourth time in her career.

The 26-year-old collected four podiums and two other top five placings from the season’s nine events.

It was the third time in the past six years that the Olympic Winter Institute’s Flying Kangaroos have achieved the number one and number two world rankings at the end of the season.

Those results, and Liz Gardner’s number eight ranking, also delivered the 2008 Nations’ Cup aerial skiing crown to Australia.

The Davos event was won by home-town hero and reigning Olympic champion Evelyne Leu on 207.14 points.

Lassila posted 198.62 for her silver, and bronze went to Alla Tsuper of Belarus on 182.83.

Jacqui Cooper, with the World Cup title already in the bag, did not compete after taking a heavy fall in training prior to the competition.

Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Liz Gardner finished in sixth place on 155.77 points.

Cooper ended the season on 642 points, with Lassila on 460, seven points clear of Tsuper.

Gardner finished on 263 points.

The OWI trio returned home to Australia immediately following the Davos event, meeting the Australian media at a news conference at the MCG on Tuesday morning.
