WEIGHTLIFTING: Aydan McMahon has lifted his way into the Australian weightlifting record books once again beating his snatch and total by two kilograms.
McMahon is over the moon with his performance tonight lifting 100 in the snatch and 121 in the clean and jerk.
Despite McMahon’s personal bests being 102kg in the snatch and 122 kg in the clean and jerk, he was just happy to compete at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
“It was amazing! I can’t even describe the feeling of competing at a Youth Olympic Games,” he said.
The Tumut teenager snatched 100kg to beat his own Australian record by 2 kg and lifted 121kg in the clean and jerk which meant he was 3kg off James Norman’s record.
A total of 221kg gave the weightlifter two Australian records from tonight’s tournament beating his old total of 219kg.
McMahon could not thank his local coach Luke Borreggine and his YOG coach Gregory Hobl enough saying that he will be forever thankful for their efforts.
It wasn’t just fellow Aussie athletes in the crowd supporting the champion, McMahon’s family made the trip over.
“It’s hard to believe that my family travelled 24hours to watch me compete in the Youth Olympics. My Grandparents, Mum, Aunty, one of my six brothers and my girlfriend all made the trip over and I’m so thankful they did,” McMahon said.
“My family’s cheering pushed me to deliver my best and I’m just glad I could make them and my country proud.”
Norman’s record will be the lifters next goal when he returns home from a successful YOG.
“I have Nationals at the end of the year in Tasmania and that’s where I’m planning on breaking records again,” the determined lifter said.
The Australian finished 11th overall from a field of 12 with the gold medal going to Bozhidar Dimitrov ANDREEV (BUL) with an amazing total of 300kg.
