More snow to be flown to Cypress

More snow will be flown to the beleaguered Cypress Mountain venue for freestyle skiing and snowboarding, Olympics organisers said on Saturday as the battle to keep events on track went on.

More snow will be flown to the beleaguered Cypress Mountain venue for freestyle skiing and snowboarding, Olympics organisers said on Saturday as the battle to keep events on track went on.

Warm weather and a lack of snow have plagued Cypress near Vancouver, forcing officials in the run-up to the Games into a round-the-clock effort to get it ready for competition.

Tim Gayda, vice president of sport for Olympics organising committee VANOC, said more snow was needed.

"The challenge we have right now is in the landing hill and the finish area (for aerials). We are going to be flying some new snow in from across the way, from a higher elevation. And we might even look at bringing it in by truck as well," he said.

"We're taking the new fresh snow and we're mixing it in with the old snow and adding water. It sounds like a baking exercise, but we're trying to get the bonding properties of that snow back to where it should be. What we're facing is snow a bit like ball bearings."

"Largely we're dealing with snow that we received in December that has weathered unbelievable amounts of rain," Gayda added.

"We are working with what we have and we're trying to do the best we can and I think that after almost two months of no snow it's still amazing that we are where we are," he said.

Men's aerials training scheduled for Friday was cancelled but women's qualifying took place on Saturday, with men's qualifying set for Monday.

Games chiefs were forced to cancel 28,000 tickets for events at Cypress, putting a dent of 1.5 million Canadian dollars ($A1.55 million) in the Games budget amid safety concerns after almost 30 centimetres of snow was washed away, making standing areas unsafe.
