Track cyclist Shane Kelly is part of a small, elite group of athletes that have represented Australia at five Olympic Games.
He started his Olympic career with a shock silver at his first Games at Barcelona 1992 when he was only hoping for a top-10, being pipped for the gold medal by the last rider in the field, Moreno of Spain, in the 1000 metres time trial.
Four years later at Atlanta 1996, Kelly, now the reigning World Champion, was the hot favourite to win the gold medal in the time trial. In the event, his foot slipped from the bike’s pedal whilst starting and his race was ruined.
Four years later Kelly headed into his home Games at Sydney 2000 with a point to prove after Atlanta, but he discovered by may have pushed himself too hard.
On the My Sydney 2000 Podcast, presented by Swisse, Kelly chats to Tim Gilbert about his Olympic career spanning 16 years, sharing the highs and lows and how special it was to compete in front of all his family and friends at Sydney 2000 – making it his favourite of the five Games.
