Ben Southee has set a new national speed skating record for the 1500m, recording one minute 48.24 seconds on the high altitude track in Calgary.

The former short track skater eclipsed the time of 1:48.59 set just last weekend by Josh Lose.

Southee finished in 24th place in the B Division of the World Cup event.

Also competing in Calgary, Sophie Muir placed 20th in the B Division 500m, in a time of 39.09, just outside the national record of 38.99.

Daniel Greig was unfortunately disqualified in the men’s 500m.

The Calgary World Cup continues over the weekend and on Monday, Australian time.
