Tiger Woods is not in Copenhagen but two glamorous players will woo the IOC members ahead of Friday’s vote to include golf and rugby 7’s in the 2016 Olympics.
Michelle Wie from the USA and Norway’s Suzann Pettersen will spearhead golf’s push to rejoin the Olympic movement.
Wie told the media today she would be honoured to play in the Olympics.
“It would be the highest achievement for any golfer to play in the Olympics,” she said. “Representing your country at the Olympics takes me to a whole new place, it would mean so much more because the stakes are so much higher”.
Suzann Pettersen said “I get goosebumps watching the Olympics every two years, it would be the ultimate to win the gold medal and hear your national anthem”.
Tiger Woods is in San Francisco for the President’s Cup. He is committed to playing at the Olympics and will send a video message to the IOC Session prior to Friday’s vote.
Golf and Rugby were two sports both recommended to the IOC members at the 2005 IOC Session but failed to make the cut. Since then they have included women athletes in their recommendations.
The IOC Executive Board will recommend both sports to the members. They can accept, or reject, none, one or both sports.
If golf does make the cut this time they are yet to identify a course in Rio to stage the Olympic competition.
