Olympic Torch Relay makes history

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay has just completed its 11th day en route to the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay has just completed its 11th day en route to the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

The Flame which began its Canadian tour on 22 October, will travel by land, air and water during its 106-day journey and will visit more than 1000 communities across the diverse land that is Canada.

From Victoria, the Flame travelled up the far north-west of the country with a relay of torchbearers including Australian dual Olympic medallist Alisa Camplin carrying the torch through the Yukon on Northwest Territories.

From one extreme border to the other, the relay has recently reached to the furthest north the Olympic Flame has ever been. Day 10 of the relay saw the torch in the polar bear capital of the world, Churchill, Manitoba.

After completing its journey through Churchill, the flame took to the skies towards the northernmost inhabited settlement in the world. The troops at Canadian Force Station (CFS) Alert welcomed the Flame and staged outdoor games with teams named Miga, Quachi, Sumi and Inukshuk after the Vancouver 2010 mascots.

The Torch Relay is now making its way down the east coast of Canada headed for Newfoundland and Labrador.
