A collision in the final has ended Jenny Owens' hopes of victory in the Jeep King of the Mountain ski cross event in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Owens faced the 2008 X Games gold medalist Magda Iljans of Sweden, Canadian skier Anik Demers, also an X Games gold medalist, and 19-year-old rookie Julia Murray in the final.
Murray, though young, has an excellent pedigree, being the daughter of Canadian downhiller, the late Dave Murray, and former freestyle skier Stephanie Sloan.
Owens finished third in her qualifying round after “a few mistakes”, then won her semi-final, but came unstuck in the final, getting tangled up in a collision between Iljans and Murray on the second last turn before the finish line.
“I was just overtaking Magda and Julia was less than a ski length away, (when) Magda got caught up on Julia’s skis and she went down, crashing right into me and taking me down too,” Owens said.
“I was knocked out because I landed head first into the snow. When I came to, I had no idea where I was or anything, which was very confusing for me!”
“They took me to the hospital for a scan and everything seems fine. I just have to be careful over the next few weeks. I’m still forgetting where I am, a little confused at times and my memory isn’t the best right now, so I’m hoping that things improve very soon.”
The former Olympic downhiller separated her shoulder in the fall, and now faces four weeks rehab on that injury. It does not, however, require surgery.
Owens missed the final World Cup event of the season in Valmalenco to ski in the Jeep event, dropping back to seventh in the ski cross World Cup standings.
