Despite nursing knee and groin injuries, Jenny Owens has qualified for the opening skier cross World Cup event in Les Contamines, France, overnight. Australian compatriot Katya Crema finished mid-field, missing a berth in the final by just two places, skiing to 18th place in her debut World Cup appearance.

Heavy snowfalls made skiing conditions difficult, and also forced the postponement of the head-to-head rounds to Sunday morning.

Owens was happy to make the finals, given the problems she was experiencing with her leg injury,, while Crema’s coach Matt Lyons was pleased with Crema’s debut given the nature of the course.

“The course had lots of air in it,” Lyons said, “and it was quite different to the GS and straight sections that Katya is used to skiing.”

“She is annoyed with herself for not qualifying, but she hasn’t had much exposure to the sort of course she had to ski today.”

“There are things we know she has to work on but she beat half the field today, so that’s a very good start.”

"I wasnt so fast in qualifying today," Owens said. "I strained my groin muscle on the first training run yesterday, and I also injured my right shin and knee a little in warm up."

"The course was slower so most girls were landing on the flat. I wasnt as aggressive as I would have liked but still managed to qualify for the finals tomorrow by placing 13th."

"Katya Crema was pretty impressive for her first Ski Cross. She also didnt have a perfect run but came in 18th so only just missed out on qualifying which im sure was a little frustrating for her."

"Kat might be coming to the World Cup in Austria next week so hopefully she will qualify there. It was great to have some other Aussies around and hopefully that will continue into the future."
