The Australian Pacific Games weightlifting Team has continued its impressive haul of medals in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on day three of competition.

PACIFIC GAMES: The Australian Pacific Games weightlifting Team has continued its impressive haul of medals in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on day three of competition.

The Team claimed seven medals, to bring the Australian medal tally to six gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze. Host Papua New Guinea lead the tally with an impressive 36 medals.

Tasmanian Camilla Fogagnolo claimed bronze in the clean and jerk and overall in the 75kg division.

Despite two podium finishes, she said she was disappointed she failed to record four of the six lifts.

“I wasn’t even close today. It was just a mental thing,” she said.

“I’ll need to improve if I want to compete at the World Championships at the end of the year.”

The 29-year-old has been competing for 15 years and said this is her first multi-sport event.

“It’s great having all the sports together. It’s an amazing village and it’s just got a beautiful environment.”

Teammate Ben Shaw was also disappointed with his lifts in the 75kg men’s division, after he was unsuccessful on four from six lifts.

Despite this he was able to push through to record a fourth place overall finish.

Earlier in the day Australian Malek Chamoun claimed three medals in the 85kg division, in front of a vocal Papua New Guinea crowd.

The 26-year-old took home gold in the snatch, silver in the clean and jerk and overall.
While in the same event, Singapore Youth Olympian Liam Larkins scored two medals; bronze in the snatch and overall.

At the Port Moresby Yacht Club the Australian sailors had another good day on the water.

In the Laser Perth’s Mark Spearman claimed victory in both races, while Victorian Thomas Vincent placed fourth and second.

In the women’s Laser Radial Carissa Bridge finished third and third in her two races.

The sailing runs until Saturday 11 July.

The Australian rugby sevens Team are set to kick off their Games campaign on Wednesday, with tough matches against Fiji, New Caledonia and Tahiti.

Opening Ceremony flagbearer Nicole Beck will captain the Team as they fight to claim Australia's first Pacific Games rugby sevens medal.
