PAC GAMES: Australia has added another 13 medals to its 2015 Pacific Games tally on day two of competition in Port Moresby.
At the Sir John Guise indoor stadium it was almost an all-Australian affair in the weightlifting 63kg division, with teammates Pip Malone and Kiana Elliot nabbing gold and bronze, respectively.
Malone was ecstatic to be victorious in her first international competition, lifting a combined weight of 188kg.
While Papua New Guinea’s Sandro Ako won overall silver with 183kg and Elliot bronze with 181kg.
“The gold was so unexpected. I’m so happy we were both up there, it’s better than being alone. Plus Kiana is a superstar to be up there at only 17-years-old,” she said.
“I was going to start heavier in the snatch but I struggled in the warm up so the coaches made the decision to start lower. We just played it safe to get the overall total - to come home with that gold.”
For 17-year-old Elliot the Games were her first senior competition.
“I didn’t have a great lifting day but I gave it what I could on the day,” she said.
The first-year University science student took up the sport two years ago, after eight years competing in gymnastics.
“I study part-time so I can pursue this sport. I want to give it my all and hopefully make the senior World Championships Team in November.”
In the men’s 77kg Austraian teammates Francois Etoundi and Mitch Delbridge were also victorious, placing first and third respectively in the snatch.
But the pair were no match for PNG’s Philip Toua Udia who, in front of a cheering home crowd, took home the silver in the snatch and gold in the clean and jerk and overall.
In the women’s 58kg division, Australian Tia-Clair Toomey wowed in her international debut.
The Queenslander scored three silver medals; overall, snatch and clean and jerk.
“I’m happy to being home silver from my first international competition,” she said.
“I’m really proud to have experienced this. It’s rewarding to see all the Australian athlete cheering for me and seeing the flag go up at the medal ceremony.
“It’s even bigger than the Commonwealth Games trials last year. It’s a lifetime experience. ”
Toomey scored 78kg in her second snatch attempt, but was unsuccessful in her third lift at 79kg.
“The snatch felt good in the warm-up, but once I got on the platform it was really nerve wracking. I got distracted by the idea of being on the stage,” she said.
In the clean and jerk she claimed three successful lifts, with a top weight of 98kg.
“In the clean and jerk I was more fired up, I was able to play tactic over going for personal bests,” she said.
“My next big sporting event will be the CrossFit Worlds later this month. And then the next big weightlifting event will be Nationals in August in Melbourne.”
In other weightlifting divisions, West Australian Matthew Munns finished fourth in the snatch with a lift of 113kg and sixth in the clean and jerk with 142kg.
While over at the Port Moresby Yacht Club, sailing kicked off on day two of the Games.
In the Laser category Perth’s Mark Spearman won both race one and race two while Victorian Thomas Vincent finished fourth and third.
Carissa Bridge finished fourth in the first race and second in the second race of the Laser Radial.
Sailing runs until Saturday 11 July.
