CYCLING - TRACK: The Adelaide Superdrome was set alight by the Australian Cycling Team who won all seven gold medals on day two of the Oceania Track Cycling Championships.
But the upset of the meet came when two decorated compatriots went head-to-head. Australian Paralympic gold medallist Stephanie Morton (SA) knocked off Olympic bronze medallist Kaarle McCulloch (NSW) in the Kierin final.
At the London 2012 Paralympic Games Morton raced as the sighted pilot for Paralympian Felicity Johnson and won the 1km time trial while McCulloch won bronze in the team sprint with Anna Meares.
Morton and McCulloch, who have each won three World Championship crowns and held world records, lined up for the Oceania Kierin final last night.
Morton finished second to Meares in the event at the 2011 Nationals, but this time Australia’s golden girl chose to support her teammates from the sidelines rather than strap in.
Morton, who turned 22 on the opening day of the championships, seized her opportunity. She made her move with a lap and a quarter to go attacking through the field and jumping to the lead.
"On this occasion it was basically now or never, " Morton said post-race.
"I did have a few different plans and scenarios going into it but as always things change and you need to go with the flow.”
The pack could not reel Morton back in and McCulloch and Stephanie McKenzie (NZ) finished with silver and bronze respectively.
"I admire and respect Kaarle but for me it's another boxed ticked in cycling and a very nice box to have ticked,” Morton said.
In other events, Ashlee Ankudinoff's (NSW) red hot form continued with the Sydney rider claiming her third gold medal of the Championships in the women’s individual pursuit.
The win follows Ankudinoff’s double gold haul on the opening night of the Oceania Championships where she took out both the teams pursuit and the women’s scratch race.
In the men’s individual pursuit it was senior debutant Alex Morgan (VIC) who claimed his second gold for the event. Morgan took the men’s individual pursuit title (4:22:783) over New South Welshman Caleb Ewan (4:23:200) and Queensland’s Mitchell Mulhurn (4:25:056), in what he describes as a milestone win in his career.
"This was an extremely important win for me- getting one against Caleb (Ewan) is a big ask,” said Morgan following his win in the men’s team pursuit on the opening night of the championships.
In the women’s under 19 individual pursuit it was junior team and individual pursuit world champion Kelsey Robson (WA) who added yet another title to her name.
Victoria’s Zac Shaw won his second medal for the championships when he set a new ‘All Comers’ record on the way to clinch gold in the under 19’s men’s 1km time trial in a time of 1min 03:459seconds.
South Australia’s Joshua Harrison claimed overall honours in the under 19 men’s Omnium finishing with 16 points, only one point clear of Bradley Heffernan (NSW) on 17. Sam Welsford (WA) claimed bronze on 22 points.
In the final event for the night, Jack Edwards won his second gold for the championships after his victory in the under 19 men’s 20km points race over Owen Gillott silver and Blake Smith bronze.
The 2013 Oceania Track Championships continue to December 1 at the Adelaide SuperDrome.
Friday’s action will see six finals including the men’s sprint and points race as well as the under 19 women and men’s sprint, under 19 men’s team pursuit and scratch race.
