SHOOTING: Current world champion Warren Potent has been narrowly defeated by Denmark’s Torben Grimmel in the 50m Rifle Prone Men Final at the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.

On his way to the silver medal Potent defeated world number one Michael McPhail - who finished 4th - “by shooting the head of a matchstick at 50 metres”, scoring 10.5 and 10.4 with his final two shots. However such was the standard of competition that these scores still weren't enough to guarantee gold.

With two excellent last shots of 10.3 and 10.7 points, the Danish athlete sealed the victory with a final score of 209.1 points, leaving Potent in second with 208.3 points.

CEO of Shooting Australia Damien Marangon said “This is a wonderful start to 2016 for Warren. He has delivered a silver medal at the first World Cup of this Olympic year, showing he is well on track to deliver a second Olympic Medal in Rio later this year.”

Warren, bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, will be nervously awaiting the team announcement of 8th April as he seeks to achieve a goal of representing Australia at a third Olympic Games.
