PREVIEW: Lockett ready to race again

SHORT TRACK: After being left disappointed in the 1500m race earlier in the Games, Deanna Lockett will have another shot as she contests the 1000m on Day 11.

SHORT TRACK: After being left disappointed in the 1500m race earlier in the Games, Deanna Lockett will have another shot as she contests the 1000m on Day 11.

Although not her favoured event, Lockett has had some international success over the 1000m. She even set her personal best time over the distance, 1:30.869, on the Sochi rink at the Test Event last year.

The 17-year-old has drawn the last heat of the session, up against Marianne St-Gelais of Canada, Veronika Windisch of Austria and Jorien ter Mors of the Netherlands.

The top two women from each of the eight heats will progress to Friday’s quarter-finals, and with St-Gelais and ter Mors ranked in the top-10 in the world, Lockett will have her work cut out for her.

After taking silver in the 500m and bronze in the 1500, Italy’s Arianna Fontana is aiming to round out her medal collection with a gold. Ranked Number 3 in the world, Fontana would become the second woman, after Wang Meng, to win a medal in all three individual short track events at the one Games.

It won’t be easy for Fontana though with a host of other well-credentialed skaters vying for gold.

1500m silver medallist Shim Suk Hee of Korea will hope to go one better in the 1000m. She enters the competition having won three of the four 2013 World Cup events over the distance. At just 17 years of age, she lacks senior experience but definitely has the talent to win gold.

Shim’s compatriot Kim Alang is looking for her first Olympic medal. Ranked second in the world over the distance, Kim is joined by a third top-ranked Korean in Park Seung-Hi, who is the defending World Champion and ranked fourth in the world.

Hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of two disqualifications at the Games so far is Great Britain’s Elise Christie. The 2013 World Championships bronze medallist, Christie will be looking to make up for the mistakes which cost her a medal in the 500m and a quarter-finals berth in the 1500m.
