ARCHERY: Queensland archers and training partners Ryan Tyack and Semra Lingard have won the men's and women's recurve gold medals at the Australian Open in Hobart.
Both had to beat experienced Olympians to snare their gold medals, with Tyack seeing off three-time Olympian Matt Gray, while Lingard beat two-time Olympian Deonne Bridger to secure her victory.
"This is a great confidence boost for me," Lingard said.
"I didn't really expect to win, and now I've taken a big step towards this year's World Championships. I'm really happy."
Tyack, who won gold at last year's World Indoor Championships, said windy conditions made the final more difficult.
"That's the most challenging aspect for an archer, the wind," he said.
"I felt really good out there today. Matt's a quality opponent so to come away with a win is really satisfying."
Lingard and Tyack are both coached by Ryan's mother, Lynette, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
In the compound events there were wins for WA's Robert Timms in the men's event and Canberra's Louise Redman in the women's event.
The Australian Open is one of the selection events for this year's Archery World Championships, an important qualification event for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
