ROWING: Australian crews competing at the Youth Olympic Games have finished well in their events on Day 4 of competition at the Nanjing Rowing-Canoeing School.
Represented in the men’s single sculls and the women’s pairs, the rowers gave it their all in the B Finals on the last day of the rowing competition.
New South Welshman Tom Schramko, an Olympian in the making, finished second in the B Final, behind Tales of Brazil in a time of 3m32.04s
A long distance specialist, Schramko found it difficult to adjust his long stroke rate to the shorter 1000m course, as did the Junior World Champion, Tim Naske of Germany, who won the Youth Olympic gold medal in the event.
“The 1000m is always more difficult that the 2000m, but I didn’t think it would be this hard," said Naske. "Before the semifinal I wasn’t sure how to race but after the semifinal everything went well.”
In the women’s pairs event, Miller and Tyler Ferris finished fourth in the B Final, in a time of 3m55.80s.
The twins didn’t mind the shorter distance but are not used to the sprint style of racing.
“We have to race a lot harder, which is not something we are used to,” Miller said.
“You get to half way and you realise you have got less than two minutes to go and so start sprinting.”
Schramko and the Ferris twins derig the boats today before returning to the Village for the remainder of the Youth Olympics. The rowers will enjoy what’s on offer as part of the Culture and Education program as well as support Australians competing on other events.
