Russian biathlete, Olga Pyleva has been stripped of the Olympic silver medal for the women’s 15km race and expelled from the Games after failing a drug test.

Russian biathlete, Olga Pyleva has been stripped of the Olympic silver medal for the women’s 15km race and expelled from the Games after failing a drug test.

She is the first athlete to fail a drug test during the Torino 2006 Games.

“Olga is going back to Russia. She’s at the airport now (Day 7- 1200),” Andrey Dmytriev, doctor for the Russian Biathlon team said.

The 30-year-old, from Kraskoiarsk in Siberia, tested positive in both samples for the stimulant Carphedon, a prohibited class S6 substance at the doping control at Cesana San Sicario.

The International Biathlon Union has also imposed a two-year ban on Pyleva from competing in any biathlon competitions that are organised by the IBU or one of its member federations, effective from 13 February 2006.

Her personal doctor, Dr. Nina Vinogradova has also been banned for two years because of having cooperated in an anti-doping rule violation.

Pyleva faced an IOC disciplinary commission on 16 February (Day 6) where she was told of her exclusion from the Games.

“The IOC sanction is to exclude the athlete from the Olympic Games. Any other sanction within the sport is up to the relevant federation. Of course, because she won a silver medal, we have to take back the silver medal. It is not our area to take further sanctions,” Giselle Davies, IOC Director of Communication said.

Svetlana Ishmouratova of Russia won the gold medal in the women’s 15km. Germany’s Martina Glagow has now been handed the silver medal and Pyleva’s team mate Albina Akhatova elevated to the bronze.

Pyleva could face questioning by the Italian magistrates, because she has breached Italy’s tough anti-drug laws. However, she has already on her way to Siberia.
