Rising Australian star Laetisha Scanlan (VIC) added another victory to her impressive résumé over the weekend as she won the women’s trap clay target title at Australia Cup 1 in Sydney.
The 20-year-old Victorian shooter produced an excellent final to stage a come from behind victory over 2004 Olympic gold medallist Suzy Balogh (NSW) at the Sydney International Shooting Centre.
Balogh had qualified in first place for the final after hitting 71 targets from 75 in the qualifying rounds, while Scanlan lay in second place having missed only one more target.
In the final however, Scanlan showed why she is currently ranked as Australian number one as she hit two more targets than Balogh to take the win by one.
Scanlan said she was happy to get her year back on track.
“It’s always hard getting back into it after the break over Christmas and I didn’t perform as well at Nationals as I wanted to,” Scanlan said. “I went away and trained pretty hard though and am really happy with how I shot here.
“We have great competition in the women’s trap at the moment and the more people that are shooting well the better it is for us as individuals.”
In other results from across the weekend, Craig Trembarth (VIC) won the men’s double trap, finishing four targets clear of Russell Mark (VIC), while Dina Aspandiyarova (VIC) shot an impressive final in the women’s 10m air pistol to defeat Lalita Yauhleuskaya (VIC).
Yauhleuskaya then reversed the result in the women’s 25m pistol, claiming victory over Aspandiyarova and Hayley Chapman (SA).
The final of the men’s trap was won in a shoot-off by Adam Vella (VIC) over fellow Victorian Brett Dunstan, with the up and coming Michael McNabb (NSW) in third place.
