SHOOTING: Veteran shooter Lalita Yauhleuskaya is the best-placed Australian halfway through the women's 25m pistol event at the London Olympics.

SHOOTING: Australia’s Lalita Yauhleuskaya has finished 17th and Hayley Chapman 34th in the women’s 25 metre pistol competition at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Yauhleuskaya completed the six rounds with a score of 580, while Chapman completed her Olympic debut with a score of 568.

Yauhleuskaya was philosophical about her performance, following the competition.

“I did the best job I could do. I gave my absolute best.”

For Chapman, these Games have been an eye opening experience.

The 20 year old entered her name in Australian sporting history, joining with her father David as the first father/daughter combination to compete for Australia at an Olympic Games.

Chapman too, was reflective after the qualifying rounds.

“I would have preferred to have shot a better score, but it was a great experience.”

Shooting Section Manager Nick Sullivan said the future of the sport is looking good with youngsters like Chapman in the sport.

"I was really proud of the way Hayley bounced back from her first three rounds. Her rapid fire was top class and Hayley has a big future," Sullivan said.

Chapman’s father David will be among two Australians in action on day 6 of competition. He will contest the 25 metre rapid fire competition.

While a familiar name will return to the shooting range when Atlanta gold medalist Russell Mark, competing in his 6th Olympic Games, will contest the double trap competition.
