Australia's short track squad for the XX Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy has been finalised and another medal is not out of the question.
Salt Lake 2002 Olympians Mark McNee, Alex McEwan and Stephen Lee are heading for their second Winter Games after making their way through the Australian short track speed skating qualifying trials in Sydney on Wednesday.
The trio will be joined by fellow Brisbane skaters Lachlan Hay, 19, and Elliot Shriane, 18, the two remaining members of the Olympic Winter Institute team which earned Australia a place in the 5000m relay at Torino 2006 through their performances in World Cup events in Europe in November.
After Bradbury's "last man standing" gold medal at Salt Lake 2002, the well-credentialed relay team and their spot of bad luck a few days earlier was forgotten.
In prime position to qualify for the four-team final, the Australians had their race called off when a Korean skater was injured on the ice after taking out an Italian opponent.
The race was controversially re-run and the Koreans eventually disqualified but the Australians didn't have enough gas left in the tank to finish in the top two.
"It was a pretty dodgy call, we were pretty sure the injured Korean wasn't quite as bad as he was making out," McEwan told AAP of the incident.
"We were a bit down. We'd been through 3000 metres when it was re-started.
"We trained for a 5000 metre race, not an 8000 metre one."
While Bradbury retired into Australian folklore the trio have continued to plug away at their sport in the hope things will go their way in Italy.
Australia is one of only eight countries to have qualified for the 5000m relay at the Torino Games.
The Australians are confident of making the four-nation final and then, such is the nature of the sport, from there anything can happen.
On Thursday the men's individual event places were finalised on the final day of the qualifying trials.
As expected Mark McNee has claimed the 1000 and 1500m spots and Alex McEwan will race the 500m event.
In the Australian women's trials, Brisbane 19-year-old Emily Rosemond was too strong for rising NSW junior Bree McSweeny, booking her place in the 1000m and 1500m individual events at the Games.
