SHOOTING: It was a case of so near and yet so far for the two Australians in the men's skeet competition at the Rio Olympic Games on Saturday
Keith Ferguson missed a six-way shoot off for the final by just one target after a clean final round, with Paul Adams a further 2 shots back.
Both shooters shot 23 in their first round of the day after beginning the day 3 shots from the lead in bright and still conditions at the Olympic Shooting Complex at Deodoro.
Ferguson, 36, then shot a perfect 25 to give himself the best chance of going further in the competition but he was one shot too far back. He finished ranked 10th an improvement of 10 places from his Olympic debut in London.
Adams finished with 23 and a final ranking of 19 on his Olympic debut.
The skeet competition was won by Italian Gabriele Rossetti in a tense final over Swedens Marcus Svenson.
The men's skeet was the final event on the shotgun program.
Earlier, David Chapman finished 25th in the men's rapid fire pistol competition after some issues with his firearm cost him dearly in the opening round of qualifying.
Chapman had his pistol jam during his final series which resulted in a score of 76 when he had averaged in the low 90's for his previous rounds.
"It's one of those things that can happen in rapid fire but it's just a shame it happened during the Olympic Games," three-time Olympian Chapman said.
The gold medal was taken out by German Christian Ritz.
The shooting program concludes on Sunday with just one event, the men's 50 metre 3 position rifle competition, where Will Godward and Dane Sampson will represent Australia
