Australian star Tom Slingsby believes he delivered a message to London Olympics rivals with a dominant gold medal performance at the sailing World Cup in The Netherlands.

Australian star Tom Slingsby believes he delivered a message to London Olympics rivals with a dominant gold medal performance at the sailing World Cup in The Netherlands.

The World Sailor of the Year produced a week of consistent excellence, winning six out 10 Laser races and finishing top 10 in all, to emerge 16 points clear of Brazil's Bruno Fontes.

Slingsby finished third in Sunday's final race, with his overall victory putting him on top of the World Cup standings and capping a fine campaign by the Australian team.

It came a day after world champions Matthew Belcher and Malcolm Page took the 470 class gold medal, extending their lead in the World Cup standings.

The 49er crew Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen and RS:X boardsailor Jessica Crisp won silver medals on Sunday and Allison Shreeve (RS:X) and Brendan Casey (Finn) won bronze.

Three-time world champion Slingsby took a lot of encouragement out of his success as he looks to make amends for his disappointing 22nd placing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"Holland's been a good place for me, it's windy and wavy and very similar to (2012 Olympic site) Weymouth," Slingsby said.

"I was sailing quite a low risk strategy all week, had good speed and knew I was fast in the wind so I didn't have to take much risk.

"If I can do well in conditions like this it proves to the other guys that I'm a contender next year and I'm always happy to do that.

"Winning here means I've qualified to be nominated for the Australian Olympic team, it's good to finally get it done.

"It's up to the other Australians to try and get another qualifier on the board and catch me."
