Australian diving officials are confident London Olympian Anabelle Smith will be fit to compete at Grand Prix on the Gold Coast

DIVING: Australian diving officials are confident London Olympian Anabelle Smith will be fit to compete at next weekend’s Grand Prix on the Gold Coast, after she was a late withdrawl from an event in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

22-year-old Smith, who was battling a rib injury going into this year’s World Championship trials, felt slight discomfort in the same area during her warm-up for Saturday’s springboard preliminaries.

It was decided Smith should withdraw from the event as a precaution, with several major events coming up soon.

Team officials reported Smith was moving much more freely on Sunday and should be fit to compete at next week’s Gold Coast event.

Nick Jeffree and Brittany O’Brien won bronze in the platform synchro in Kuala Lumpur, while in the women’s platform synchro O’Brien and Annarose Keating finished fourth.

Keating and Jeffree teamed up to finish fifth in the springboard mixed synchro, while Jeffree was sixth in the men’s platform.

Keating and O’Brien made the semi-finals of the women’s platform on the opening day of competition, while Joshua Kehegias had a similar result in the men’s springboard.

A full strength Australian team will take on some of the best divers in the world at the Gold Coast Grand Prix, beginning Thursday.

It’s the first major international event at the Gold Coast diving pool, the venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
