Springboard success for Mitcham

DIVING - Olympic platform gold medallist Matthew Mitcham has made a strong start in his switch to springboard events at the Australian Open in Brisbane.

DIVING - Olympic platform gold medallist Matthew Mitcham has made a strong start in his switch to springboard events at the Australian Open in Brisbane.

Mitcham signalled his intention to focus on springboard events- which are easier on the body- after an injury-plagued Olympic lead up saw him miss the 10m platform final in London.

And the early signs are good, with Mitcham taking out the 1m springboard national title on Wednesday and qualifying first for Thursday's 3m springboard final.

The 24-year-old scored 391.55 points in the 1m final to finish ahead ahead of James Connor (384.55) and Joshua Kehagias (307.65).

He has also qualified ahead of Connor for the 3m final.

Mitcham made headlines last month when he revealed he battled a methamphetamine addiction in 2011 that almost ended his career and destroyed his life.

Anabelle Smith led the way into Friday's women's 3m springboard final while Dominic Bedggood topped the men's 10m platform semi-finals.

London Olympic silver medallist Brittany Broben is hot favourite for the women's platform final on Thursday.
