Ski & Snowboard Australia’s Aerial Skiing Development team had a successful winter training camp in Utah throughout January to March. The team was based in America at Utah’s Snowbasin Ski Resort, official sponsors of the Australian Aerial Ski Team this season.

This year the team consisted of Kate Bender, Denita Mudge, Melinda Cleland, Elizabeth Wong and Jennifer Schafer, as well as the newest addition to the group, Kendle Richards. Bree Munro briefly joined the team following the completion of her World Cup tour through North American.

The nine-week ski camp was designed to further develop skiing skills, and Snowbasin proved to be a perfect location, team with uncrowded runs and plenty of steep and diverse terrain. Snowbasin was home to the Alpine Downhill events during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Mark Calton, Development Team Manager, ensured the girls were assisted in their progression getting a variety of experienced freestyle skiers & coaches from the local area. The ski camp is another step forward for team members, many of whom are striving to make the transition to the Australian Aerial Ski Team.

The team took the opportunity to watch the Flying Kangaroos at this year’s Deer Valley Freestyle World Cup in Utah in late January. This event gave the development team a chance to see what is involved with international World Cup events, as well as an opportunity to support our fellow Australian athletes in competition.

During February the team went to Snowbasin’s sister ski resort, Sun Valley in Idaho, for a second 10-day ski camp. The resort provided many advanced mogul runs perfect for further development of freestyle skiing skills. The team trained on the Sun Valley freestyle team’s mogul course and Kate Bender, Melinda Cleland, Elizabeth Wong and Bree Munro later fore-ran in a regional freestyle event.

After a busy winter the team is now back home preparing for a water ramping in Melbourne at the beginning in April.
