SSA names four skiers to World Championships team

Ski and Snowboard Australia has selected four skiers to the team that will contest the Alpine World Championships in Bormio from January 29 to February 12.

Ski and Snowboard Australia has selected four skiers to the team that will contest the Alpine World Championships in Bormio from January 29 to February 12.

Named to the team are Craig Branch, Luke Deane, Demian Franzen and Brad Wall.

Branch has represented Australia in downhill super G and combined at the past three World Championships, with a best result of 14th in Combined in St Anton in 2001 and 26th in downhill atat both the 2001 championship and the 1999 in Vail.

Luke Deane is a giant slalom specialist. In his only World Championships outing, the 2003 titles in St Moritz he did not finish the GS.

He was 14th in the downhill in the World Junior Championships in Verbier in 2001, and this season has had three top ten finishes in Europa Cup GS events.

Brad Wall represented Australia at the 2001 and 2003 world titles, with a best finish on 29th in GS in St Anton.

Demian Franzen, who has dual Australian and Swiss nationality but skis for Australia, will be competing in his first World Championships. He finished 13th in slalom in the Swiss National Championships last season, and this season has posted two top five results, including one podium place, in FIS slaloms.
