Olympians and FOXTEL personalities Matt Shirvington, Leisel Jones and Matthew Mitcham today celebrated International Olympic Day

Olympians and FOXTEL personalities Matt Shirvington, Leisel Jones and Matthew Mitcham today celebrated International Olympic Day with a host of young athletes who will soon head to Singapore to represent Australia at the first ever Youth Olympic Games from August 14.

The Games will be broadcast on Channel 517 (Singapore Youth Olympic Games Channel) and will showcase over 3600 young athletes from around the world who will compete in 26 sports, across 201 events at 12 venues over 13 days.

Australia will send a team of 100 athletes, all aged between 14 and 18, many of whom will be taking their first steps on a journey to London for the 2012 Olympics.

Shirvington, who will report for FOXTEL from Singapore during the Games, said: “It is fantastic to have such an impressive line-up of young athletes represent Australia at the first ever Youth Olympic Games.

These kids are our sporting future and it is amazing for them to have this opportunity on their way to London and beyond.”

15 year old Australian age champion swimmer, Emma McKeon (daughter of Olympic swimmer Ron McKeon and Commonwealth Games swimmer, Susie Woodhouse) said: “Attending the first ever Youth Olympic Games is such an honour. My parents both have such fond memories of representing their country so I can’t believe I’ll be representing Australia at this history-making event, and I am so excited that thanks to FOXTEL, my friends at home will be able to watch our team compete.”

Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates said: “The support from FOXTEL is terrific. Family and friends back in Australia will be able to watch our athletes compete at the Youth Olympic Games. On a much broader scale, the Olympic movement appreciates FOXTEL’s support of youth. Younger children will see this event and want to try some of the Olympic sports on the Singapore program. This leads to more children playing sport and leading a healthier lifestyle.”

Shirvington will provide daily updates throughout the historic Games, covering special Olympic moments achieved by the young squad. He will also catch up with the athletes, coaching staff, families and friends.
