Australians will be chasing medals under lights at next year’s Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Australians will be chasing medals under lights at next year’s Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

For the first time in Winter Olympic history some of the top outdoor events will be held at night including the aerial skiing, moguls and snowboarding.

“There will be a real spread of sports across day and night whereas in the past only ice sports were held at night” said Ian Chesterman, Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Team.

Australia expects to take its biggest team ever to Turin with around 35 athletes competing across nine or ten sports.

Our aerial skiers will compete under lights at the Olympic venue in Sauze d'Oulx next week.

“The test events are very important to us especially for the aerial skiers competing under lights in Sauze d'Oulx” Chesterman said.” Our aerial skiers were very familiar with Deer Valley in 2002 and that worked to our advantage with Alisa Camplin winning the gold medal”.

Australia’s snowboard athletes have also arrived in Italy for their test event later this week. “Snowboarding is a growth area for us led by Torah Bright but our Team will have a broad spread of medal chances across moguls, snowboard and aerials” he said.

Australian Olympic officials are buoyed by the silver medal performance of Dale Begg-Smith in the World Cup moguls in Japan at the weekend. One year out from Turin he is rated a real medal chance.

Australia won two gold medals at the 2002 Salt Lake Games our greatest ever Winter Olympic performance.

“We are going to Turin with the monkey off our back after our efforts in 2002” Chesterman said.

He is hoping Alisa Camplin will recover from injury and the former World Champion aerialist Jacqui Cooper is also on the comeback trail. Lydia Ierodiaconou is currently at the top of the World Cup aerial standings.

“Any of our four women could win a medal in aerials” he said.

Chesterman expects tough opposition from the Chinese in Turin. They have made great advances in all Olympic sports, Winter and Summer.

February 10 is one year out from the Opening Ceremony of the Turin Games.
