Tatiana Borodulina has produced two top ten placings at the opening World Cup of the 2008/09 short track speed skating season.

Competing on the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic ice rink, the 23-year-old Brisbane skater finished in seventh position in the 1500m, then followed up with a sixth placing in the 500m.

Borodulina has now collected a bronze medal and four top ten results from the six races she has contested since first skating for Australia in February this year.

In the 1500m, she finished in third place in her opening heat, qualifying through to the semi-final round on her time. In the semis she was again in third place, missing a place in the A final, but qualifying for the B final which she went on to win.

In the 500m sprint event, the Olympic Winter Institute skater won her preliminary round, finished third in her heat, but again qualified through her time into the quarter final round.

A second placing and slow time in the quarter-final put her into a more difficult lane in the semi-final, but up against world champion Meng Wang of China and the powerful Canadian Jessica Gregg, who were too strong on the day.

Relegated to the B final, Borodulina went down on the last corner, after leading the entire race by a considerable margin. Borodulina was not injured in the fall and was able to get back up and still finish in second place for the sixth overall.

In other Australian results, Elliott Shriane skated to a personal best 14th placing in the 1000m, while Alix-Myra Anderson took 20th place in the second 1500m women’s event.

The OWI team will now contest the second World Cup of the season in Vancouver, commencing next Saturday, Australian time (October 25).
