BOXING: Australia's premiere female boxer, Shelley Watts, has won the women's 64kg gold medal at the Australian National Championships on the Gold Coast - but she was made to work for it.

Victoria's Alison Allan took the fight up to the Commonwealth Games gold medalist, with the large Victorian crowd contingent voicing their disapproval when the fight went to Watts.

But Watts said she was confident she had done enough.

"Yes there was some in the crowd who thought I'd lost, but they were the Victorians, and they only saw their fighter," Watts said.

"But it as a great fight. I'd never fought her before, and it's great to know there are fighters here in Australia who can push us all the way.

"It's great for the sport of women's boxing."

It was the first tough fight Watts had contested all week, after she won her opening bout in less than two rounds, and then had a walkover in her semi-final.

In the much anticipated 75kg final, Commonwealth Games boxer Kaye Scott won a hard-fought battle against 19-year-old Caitlin Parker.

As with the Watts/Allan fight, many in the crowd believed the decision could have gone either way.

In the men’s competition, Commonwealth Games silver medalist Joseph Goodall won a scrappy fight against Victoria’s Kris Terzievski to claim his second national super heavyweight title.

Goodall revealed after his bout he had been battling glandular fever.

“It’s been pretty hard for the past few weeks, I’m just trying to get my body back to how it was,” he said.

There were also wins for Daniel Lewis in the middleweight division, while Jason Whateley finally broke through after a string of silver medals, beating Beijing OIympian Daniel Beahan for the heavyweight title.

There were also wins for Kristy Harris in the 51kg, and her Melbourne sparring partner and barrister, Simone Bailey, who was elated to break through for her first national title.
