Street skateboarder Chloe Covell threw down the world’s highest scoring street skateboarding run of all-time and top five finishes at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup and 49erFX Sailing World Championships highlight the weekend in Olympic sport.
Skateboarding – Street – Silver for Chloe Covell in Dubai
Chloe Covell is a World Skateboarding Tour silver medallist in Dubai after a career-best performance in the semi-finals. Entering the final as the skater to beat after top-scoring in the semi-finals, the Australian did what no female skater has done before in earning a 93.49 score from the judges in the semi-finals, the highest run score in World Skateboarding Tour history.
Then in the final Liz Akama (JPN) stepped up her game to beat Chloe to gold, scoring 270.84 compared to Chloe's 267.29. In the final Chloe was only able to land two of her five tricks ending with a score of 267.29 (a combination of her best run score in the final + two highest trick scores).
Fellow Australian Liv Lovelace finished 13th in the semi-finals on 48.92, while Rome Collyer also finished 13th in the men's semi-finals with 55.78.
This event was the last chance for skaters to accrue points towards their Olympic World Skate Ranking before a cut is made ahead of the Olympic Qualifying Series (OQS). The OQS is a two-part competition series taking place in Shanghai (16-19 May) and Budapest (20-23 June) and will determine the final fields for Paris 2024.
Artistic Gymnastics – James Bacueti vaults to 4th in Apparatus World Cup
Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist James Bacueti took fourth place in the vault at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan on Sunday.
Scoring 14.700 (9.100 execution and 5.6 difficulty), he was only outperformed by Wai Hung Shek's 15.166 (HKG), Mahdi Olfati's 14.766 (IRI) and Igor Radivilov's 14.733 (UKR).

Also in Baku Vedant Sawant finished 10th on the pommel horse, Tyson Bull 12th on the horizontal bar, Mitchell Morgans 27th on the parallel bars and Clay Stephens 28th with his floor routine.
This Apparatus World Cup was the third of four Olympic qualifying events after previous stops in Egypt and Germany. The top two athletes per apparatus based on the FIG World Cup Ranking List after the Doha, Qatar World Cup from 17-20 April earn a Paris 2024 quota by name (max 1 per NOC). Having come into the Baku event ranked third in the MAG vault world rankings, James’ strong performance contributes to his campaign to qualify for Paris 2024.
Sailing – Top 5 finish at 49erFX World Championships
Australian 49erFX team Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot have wrapped up a helter-skelter World Championships with a fifth-place finish in Lanzarote, Spain overnight.
The result is a breakthrough for the young Australian Sailing Team duo, as they battled a week of big winds and waves to finish just off the podium.
“We are really proud of what we have achieved, it is pretty cool to put together a result that we have been working towards and knew we had in ourselves,” Laura said.

“We are absolutely wrecked after the week of racing. There weren’t many days where conditions were the same, so it really kept us on our toes. We managed each day as it came, taking a simple approach to the racing and how we wanted to operate.”
They entered Sunday’s medal race in fourth position on 100 points, however in finishing 10th they copped another 20 points to sit behind the 2022 world champions Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz (NED - 63 points), the 2023 world champions Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler (SWE - 80 points), Italy’s Jana Germani and Giorgia Bertuzzi (104 points) and dual Olympic champions Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA - 116 points) on the final leaderboard.
Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine finished 29th.
In the 49er World Championships Jim Colley and Shaun Connor just missed out on making the medal race cut, finishing 11th overall.
“This our best Worlds result, and I couldn’t be prouder of how far we have come as a team and how we handled all the challenges this week threw at us,” Shaun said.

Tom Burton and Max Paul placed 22nd.
Equestrian – Aussie eventers win Team event and sweep Individual podium in New Zealand
Australian eventers had a fantastic three days at the Oceania Championships in New Zealand, dominating the podium in both the team and individual rankings.
Shane Rose on ‘Virgil’ took out individual honours, ahead of fellow Australian riders Olivia Barton and 'Hollyander HG' and Andrew Cooper on 'Sharvalley Thunder'.

Golf – Minjee Lee ties for fourth at Blue Bay LPGA
Olympian Minjee Lee has finished fourth at the Blue Bay LPGA event in China, finishing at 13 under, six shots behind winner Bailey Tardy from the USA.
A four-under final round secured the top-5 finish, with Gabriela Ruffels the next best placed Australian in 15th.
Surfing – Five alive in quest for Portugal Pro title
Five Aussies surfers are in contention for the Portugal Pro title with the women’s quarter-finals upon us and the men’s round of 32 set to begin.
Tyler Wright will face off against Hawaii's Gabriela Bryan in the women’s quarter-finals as the last remaining Aussie woman in the competition.

Ethan Ewing, Jack Robinson, Liam O'Brien and Callum Robson have all qualified for the round of 32, with the tournament running through Saturday 16 March.
Tennis – Indian Wells advances to round of 16
Alex de Minaur has powered his way to the round of 16 at Indian Wells, California with a straight sets win over no.20 seed Alexander Bublik (KAZ) 7-5 6-0.
Ellen Perez is contesting the women's doubles round of 16 with Nicole Melichar-Martinez (USA) from 12pm AEDT against Magda Linette (POL) and Bernarda Pera (USA).

Cycling – Lucas Plapp top Aussie in Paris-Nice
Tokyo Olympic track cyclist Lucas Plapp is showing he can match with the world’s elite road cyclists, finishing sixth in the eight-stage 1151km event.
The 23-year-old spent two day in the yellow leaders’ jersey, sitting on top of the general classification after stages four and five.
Shooting – Sharpshooters continue domestic nomination events
Australia’s rifle shooters contested the South Australian Championships, their final leg of the domestic nomination process ahead of the international component starting next month.
With events continuing today, Olympian Dane Sampson has already picked up several podiums, winning gold in the 50m 3-position rifle, and silver in the 10m Air Rifle.
