Australia's men's and women's 3x3 basketball teams have completed a rare double, both winning the Asia Cup title, while Matt Ebden lifted the Miami Open men’s doubles trophy to highlight the weekend in Olympic sport.
Basketball – 3x3 – Gangurrus teams crowned Asia Cup champions
The Australian men's and women's 3x3 teams won the Asia Cup in Singapore on Sunday, with both teams going undefeated throughout the entire tournament.
Alex Wilson received tournament MVP honours for her role in the women's team, hitting a clutch three-pointer in the championship game against New Zealand for an 18-13 win. Anneli Maley top scored for the women’s Gangurrus with 31 points, Marena Whittle dropped 30 and Lauren Mansfield dished out 11 assists.
The men’s team defeated Iran 21-7 in the final. Todd Blanchfield earned the men’s MVP award with his 47 points leading the Gangurrus, with the team beginning the tournament in the qualifying draw. It was also the first time Will Hickey, James O'Donnell, Josh Davey and Todd played together.
Tennis – Miami Open doubles title for Matt Ebden
Matt Ebden has lifted his 11th ATP career doubles trophy, his second at the ATP Masters 1000 level, at the Miami Open with Rohan Bopanna (IND).
They fought back in the final after losing the first set, to beat no.2 seeds Ivan Dodig (CRO) and Austin Krajicek (USA) 6-7(3) 6-3 [10-8].
Golf - Hira Naveed finishes runner up in Arizona
Hira Naveed finished runner up at the LPGA Tour Championship in Arizona over the weekend, in just the second start of her rookie season. Fellow Aussies Gabriela Ruffels and Hannah Green finished in tied 13th and tied 21st respectively.
In the men’s, Cam Davis was the top Australian with a tie for 21st at the Texas Childrens Houston Open.
Judo – Top-five at Antalya Grand Slam
Aoife Coughlan finished equal-fifth in the women’s -70kg division at the Antalya Grand Slam in Turkey, equalling her result from last week’s Grand Slam in Georgia.
Surfing – Aussies out of Bells Beach Pro
The Bells Beach Pro continued over the weekend, with all Australians surfers now eliminated from the competition. Ethan Ewing, Morgan Cibilic and Ellie Harrison were the top placed Aussies, each progressing through to the quarter-finals before being knocked out.
The WSL Tour next heads to Margaret River from 11 April to 21 April.
Weightlifting – Paris hopefuls take on 2024 IWF World Cup
Aussie weightlifters are in Thailand for the 2024 World Cup, the final compulsory qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Kiana Elliott, Jacqueline Nichele, Sarah Cochrane, Eileen Cikamatana, Kyle Bruce and Oliver Saxton are set to compete this week. The top 10 ranked athletes in each of the 10 categories earn an Olympic quota spot at 28 April.
Sailing – Princesa Sofía Regatta gets underway
A team of more than 40 Aussies has gathered in Palma, Spain to race at the 53rd Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía Regatta.
Competing across all ten classes, the team features seven members that have been selected to the Paris 2024 Australian Olympic Team.
