Germany’s Kati Wilhelm has become the first female biathlete to win three Olympic gold medals.

Germany’s Kati Wilhelm has become the first female biathlete to win three Olympic gold medals, after a comfortable victory in the 10km pursuit at Cesana San Sicario on 18 February (Day 8).

Carrying a German flag in celebration down the final straight, Wilhelm crossed the finish line in 36:43.6, one minute and 13.6 seconds clear of team-mate Martina Glagow.

Russian, Albina Akhatova fell over the line in a dramatic finish to claim the bronze, 1.21 seconds behind Wilhelm.

The Russian sharpshooter was visibly distressed after suffering intense liver pain during the race. She was in 2nd place after the final shooting round, but Glagow skied past her on the final rise.

Wilhelm’s dominant performance was even more impressive given the difficult conditions, with heavy snowfall and gusty winds hampering many competitors.

“This is the biggest moment of my career. Before the race I felt nervous, but at the same time at peace. Everything went perfectly and I had no problems with the weather,” Wilhelm said while fighting back tears.

Wilhelm was not aware of her history-making feat. “I didn’t know I was the first one but, that makes me feel very proud of myself,” she said.

The German won gold medals in the sprint and relay events at Salt Lake City 2002.

Despite the conditions, Wilhelm missed just one shot from her 20 attempts, with Glagow, Akhatova, and the fourth place getter and 15km individual gold medallist Svetlana Ishmouratova of Russia all shooting perfect rounds.

It has been a great Games for all of these women. Ishmouratova won gold in the 15km individual race, but following the disqualification for doping of silver medallist, Russian Olga Pyleva post-event, Glagow was awarded the silver and Akhatova the bronze. Akhatova also finished fourth in the 7.5km sprint.
