BASKETBALL 3x3: Australia dominated the first day of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival women’s basketball tournament at Darling Harbour.
The Sydney city skyscrapers made for a beautiful backdrop to the basketball courts in front of the Chinese Gardens as Australia’s Green and Gold Women’s teams reminded their opponents of who they were up against and why they came to play.
First up was Australia’s Gold team who gave Guam, representing Combined Oceania, a good serving, wrapping up the game 21-8.
The 3 on 3 play kept the teams on their toes, with the one 10 minute period making it fast paced and energetic.
The Australia-New Zealand rivalry continued, in an even game up until the end, with New Zealand defeating the Australia Green team 16-14.
“The 3 on 3 play makes you think faster and makes the games more exciting,” New Zealand’s Tessa Boagni said.
Despite the heat, the players proved to be true professionals showcasing their talents in front of a full crowd, with passers-by lining the courts to support their fellow Aussies.
The Australia Gold team certainly made their fans proud with a 14-11 win over China, topping off the day in style.
The women’s round robin competition continues on Friday, before the finals phase on Saturday.
