BASKETBALL: The Australian women’s basketball team has made the podium its second home over the past 20 years, medalling in every Olympic Games from 1996 to 2012.

With the streak now at five straight medals, this year’s unit is determined to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors.

“The team’s tradition is to bring home a medal,” guard Leilani Mitchell said. “The teams before us have left a strong legacy and we are trying to follow in their footsteps. We want to win a medal.”

This year’s squad features seven first-time Olympians, and Mitchell feels the team has come together nicely following a tour of the United States.

“We have a good mix of youth and experience, and there is a lot of excitement on our team,” Mitchell said.

“We have always been known for playing hard. We never give up and we are really fiery. We hope to do the same again this year.”

Facing the hosts Brazil in the opening game, Mitchell believes it will be a tough encounter.

“I think that they have a good team,” Mitchell said.

“They have good inside presence and it is hard to stop De Souza. They have guards that can shoot outside and run the floor. We expect it to be a very physical game and they’ll come out with a lot of fire and passion.”
